Garbanzo beans, also known as chickpeas, were cultivated during 3000 B.C. At present, Pakistan, India, Turkey and also Mexico are the largest consumers and also producers of garbanzo beans.

There are two varieties of these beans available, the desi and the kabuli. As compared to the desi beans, the kabuli beans that are larger and smooth are available widely. The Garbanzo beans are also available in red, brown, green and black colors.

Garbanzo beans contain lectin. These are plant proteins that are sugar binding. Consuming this in excess can lead to nutrient deficiencies, poor digestion and also damage to the intestines.
